Crazy Laws in Different Countries That Will Shock You

Feb 19 2025

Traveling is all fun and games until you accidentally break a law you didn’t even know existed.

Some countries have laws so bizarre, they sound like jokes—but they’re 100% real.

Here are some of the strangest ones:

1. No High Heels at Ancient Sites – Greece

Greece has banned high heels at ancient sites to prevent further damage to their historic ruins.

So, it’s sneakers or flats if you want to explore without getting fined.

2. It’s Illegal to Chew Gum – Singapore

Singapore is one of the cleanest cities in the world, and one reason is its strict laws—including a ban on chewing gum.

Since 1992, bringing gum into the country (except for medical use) is illegal.

3. You Must Smile – Milan, Italy

In Milan, it’s actually illegal not to smile.

A law from the 19th century requires residents to keep a happy face at all times, except in hospitals and funerals.

While it’s rarely enforced today, who wouldn’t want to walk around with a smile in Italy?

4. No Selfies with Buddhas – Sri Lanka

Tourists in Sri Lanka need to be careful when posing with Buddha statues.

Turning your back to a Buddha for a selfie is considered disrespectful and can even get you in trouble with the law.

5. Don’t Run Out of Gas on the Autobahn – Germany

The famous German Autobahn has no general speed limit, but stopping on it is illegal—even if you run out of gas.

The logic? It’s considered preventable, so you could be fined for not filling up your tank before hitting the road.
